Slow Computer? Try These Tips
Absolutely nothing is more aggravating than a slow, unresponsive computer. Well, alright, I suppose there's a handful of things more aggravating. But short of tossing out the slow computer and replacing it with a shiny new PC, what can a user do to speed things up?Here are some tips and techniques for getting your computer back on track.
- Scan for viruses and spyware. Recommended antivirus software is Kaspersky Antivirus or Kaspersky Internet Security. Recommended antispyware tools are Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware.

- Defrag your hard drive. Yes, Windows has a defrag tool, and it works okay, but
- Check the size of your paging file
- Disable unnecessary startup programs
- Clean out old temporary files using the free program CCleaner. Caution: by default it will empty your Recycle Bin
Miscellaneous Issues that Might Slow Down Your Computer
- Make sure your IDE interfaces are using DMA mode transfers, not PIO
- Check
the Printers & Faxes folder for printers that have been deleted,
but still have stalled print jobs; cancel all stalled print jobs, then
the printer should finally be fully deleted, then reboot your computer
